Fenestraria Aurantiaca, Baby Toes: From the deserts of Southern Africa comes Fenestraria aurantiaca, more commonly known as Baby Toes. This unusual plant belongs to the large family of Aizoaceae. Known as "mimicry" plants, these are particularly good at camouflaging themselves to blend in with their environment. Baby Toes gets its name from its finger-like (toe-like?) leaves that grow in upright clusters. Each "finger" of the plant features a translucent window. Sunlight filters through the windows to enable photosynthesis. In desert environments, it is often only the window that is visible above the sand. At home, watch Baby Toes in the late summer through fall, when it will bloom with bright 2" white or yellow flowers.
